Horse Boarding

Full time "resident" horse boarding.  Short-term horse boarding for the vacationer.

In 1999 after not being able to find a facility with the type of natural living my sister and I wanted for our horses, we bought 22.5 acres in Gray, Maine, put up a barn, fenced in paddocks and pastures, built run-in sheds and opened for business as Thread of The Mill Farm.

We intended from the start to keep it small and personal, never overcrowding, allowing for personal care, comfort and plenty of space for each horse. Horses at TOTMF live a life that horses were intended to, a more natural life. Only in extreme weather are they shut up in the barn. In the winter they have in-and-out access to their stalls or the well constructed run-in sheds which are located in each paddock and pasture. It's their choice.

In the summer the horses are outside 24/7 with run-in sheds for shelter from inclement weather and the bugs. Our horses and those boarded with us wear the blanket that they were born with and go barefoot. They are fed primarily forage from grass pastures and hay harvested mainly off our land. At TOTMF grain is a supplement not a feed. They have access to water 24/7, which is heated in the winter.

Trail riders have found our farm ideal with riding right off the farm onto unlimited miles of trails. We don't have a formal riding arena but some folks have used and been very happy with one of the paddocks that is rectangular and appropriate in size. Riding in the pastures and hay field (off season) is also allowed.

If this is the type of living and atmosphere that you think you and your horse would be happy with please give us a call and schedule an appointment to come visit Thread of the Mill Farm.   207-657-3640

Our boarding service has a limited number of spaces, so we encourage you to contact us well in advance to inquire for dates and available spaces.
